Adopting Shelter Pets

Sustainably Sadie
Adopting Shelter Pets

About a year and a half ago, my husband and I decided our family was ready for a small addition to the household.  I grew up with pure bred Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, and hoped that a mutt would be a good fit for our family.  I wanted something with a wirery, terrier-like face and our small home mandated a small pooch.

At the Dillon Humane Shelter, http://www.montanapets.org/dillon, we got to meet four dogs fitting our criteria.  The smallest and the last of the four we met we took home that day.  Rosco came with some bad habits, habits like wandering away that landed him in doggy jail in the first place, but love and positive reinforcement have helped to train our kid-friendly, adorable pup.

Not everyone is as lucky as our family with Rosco, but adopting shelter pets is an admirable way to help sustain an ever-growing population.  If you are crazy about a particular breed, there is a shelter out there caring for that particular animal.  Pugs, Chesapeakes, Great Danes, cats, horses, hundreds of species of animals are in need of homes.

The Selina Memorial Animal Shelter, http://www.montanapets.org/smar, is based in Whitehall and has additional chapters in Boulder and Cactus Junction.  Not only are the pets that they care for in need of homes, the shelter is in need of a physical location.  Check out their Pet of the Week and look for notices of spay and neuter clinics in The Madisonian.

The internet is an amazing resource for researching pets.  Know what you can handle and afford.  We buy two bags of dog food a year—I love how affordable our small dog is.  Pure bred puppies can cost up to thousands of dollars.  If you are in the right place in your life for a new family addition, consider adopting a shelter pet.

Mother's Day, Part Two

Sustainably Sadie
Mother’s Day: Part 2

By now, I hope you’ve made a plan for how you are going to spoil the Mothers in your life this coming Sunday.  If you’re the Mom of procrastinators and (Heaven forbid) a forgetful household, make a plan to spoil yourself this 2012 Mother’s Day.  Plan a spa day, a personal day, leave a note and escape.  If your kids are thoughtful enough to make you breakfast in bed but this year you have a particular request, label the fixins with clear instructions Saturday night.

Following the spa theme, create a unique shower scrub for Mom using salt or sugar.  Many recipes are available online and you can personalize and decorate the containers.  Create an emergency kit for Mom by filling with her favorite things (chocolate?), lip stuff, calming candles etc for when mom needs a time out.

How about embellishing a hat (floppy, gardening, chic) to create a completely personal and unique gift that Mom will love?  After church, opt for a picnic lunch put together with Mom in mind.  Insulated bag, back pack, and traditional basket are among some of the many choices of picnic container.  Fill the basket with plastic wine glasses, a chilled bottle of Rosé or Mom’s favorite beverage, and her favorite finger foods.  Don’t forget something sweet (chocolate), blanket or chairs, cloth napkins, bottle opener and a special note for Mom.

Create priceless art with finger paints and canvas (available at The Health Emporium in Sheridan).  I am going to try to create butterfly art using the kids’ colorfully painted feet as wings.  Bold colors and hand prints pair beautifully for a modern art installation.  Create a scrap book for Mom filled with pictures, notes, and memories that she will cherish forever.

If your Mom loves to garden, it is easy to run with that theme.  Create a seed packet bouquet; decorate flower pots then plant herbs or Mom’s favorite flavors.  For my Mom, we are building a unique “sculpture” for the garden using flower pots and rebar—an idea I got from Pinterest.com.  Spend a day at Jackson’s Garden in Sheridan.  It is an enchanting, tranquil space that is a wonderful addition to our community.

Jackson’s Garden, www.jacksonsgarden.org, is looking for members (growers) and volunteers to help with garden tasks.  Highlights for this year include early greens already harvestable from the new high tunnel (extends garden’s growing season), a new Kids Club where they tend their own garden plot, participation in the Sheridan’s Farmer’s Market (Tuesday evenings), and more events using this beautiful space as a venue.  Check out their awesome website; Jackson’s Garden is sustainable and Local!

Mother's Day, Part One

Sustainably Sadie
Mother’s Day: Part One

When life gets overwhelming, I find it therapeutic to take time out to create.  Even searching for ideas is a welcome mental break from bills and to do lists.  The internet and websites like Pinterest.com make easy work of being able to search through hundreds of suggestions, projects and hints.  I have Mother’s Day gifts to make for the wonderful mothers in my life.  I am also in search of craft projects appropriate for my 3 year old son.

While looking through my keepsake box (filled mostly with notes and pictures from our daughter), I found cards and gifts from Mother’s Day past.  One year, Eva brought home a bouquet of paper flowers.  Cut-outs of her hand were shaped into beautiful tulips.  Something as simple as paper flowers will make mom smile because it is the time spent and the thought put into gift that matters.

Hand-crafted gifts can be made with items around the house.  Re-using paper scraps, yarn, ribbons, jewelry etc is budget friendly.  I came across a craft project for making a unique locket out of a spent matchbox.  Glue paper, lace, beads and ribbon (for necklace portion) to box and include a special picture, note or memory in the inside.

My husband and son recently returned to Oregon to my help my in-laws with the Small Farmer’s Journal Annual Draft Horse Equipment Auction & Swap Meet, www.smallfarmersjournal.com.  My mother-in-law, Kristi, sent my husband back with a box of old paper pill boxes.  I don’t know how long ago pharmacists stopped using paper boxes for medication (maybe 90 years ago?) but  I am sure enjoying Mod-Podging paper scraps to these boxes.  I intend to create special keepsake boxes with special messages and I am going to attempt a couple of the paper box lockets for grandmother presents this Mother’s Day.  I am thrilled that these paper boxes will also become our Advent Calendar for Christmas…I have wanted to make one for several years now and finally have plan.

Even a handmade card paired with spring seed packets will make Mom smile.  Decorate a clean tin can and fill with herbs.  More ideas for Mother’s Day next week.  Post your suggestions and stories as comments at www.sustainablysadie.blogspot.com or email to sustainablysadie@hotmail.com.
