Technology Product Recycling

Sustainably Sadie
Electronic Recycling

Thanks to reader, Deb McNeil, for suggesting this week’s topic!  And it is a very helpful hint for sustaining the environment.  Deb was told by an employee of Butte’s Staples store that Staples is accepting office technology products for recycling at no cost.

Out of date/ broken electronics like monitors, computers, printers, cell phones and batteries should not be placed in the landfill.  To properly recycle these items can often cost a responsible person $10 or more.  Take advantage of this opportunity to properly dispose of unwanted tech products at no cost to you except for throwing them in the car when you head to Butte.  Maybe this article will spark some co-oping and through a little bit of coordination, maybe families can find collaborate to make multiple donations in one trip??

There are some stipulations…only 6 items per day per customer.  It doesn’t matter what brand the products are or where you purchased them, Staples will accept the electronics for donation.  Printers, scanners, fax, and laptops are also accepted.  Stop by when Staples is open; check out Staples.com to find out more information on their recycling program and other eco-services.  So gather up your batteries, even rechargeables, and computer pieces parts and old cell phones and have them disposed of properly.  It is a wonderful opportunity and an easy way to take care of the planet!

Please feel free to share your suggestions and sustainable successes – I would be honored to include your ideas in this on-going conversation regarding sustainability.  Post comments at www.sustainablysadie.blogspot.com or email sustainablysadie@hotmail.com.  Thanks for reading!

Random Acts of Kindness

Sustainably Sadie
Pay It Forward/ Random Acts of Kindness

I have seen in the last few years, possibly made popular by the 2000 film drama, Pay It Forward, or perhaps just human compassion that I recognize more easily as an adult, wonderful Random Acts of Kindness.  I have an amazing customer at the coffee shop, who regularly buys the customer behind her in line a cup of coffee by leaving an extra five dollars with me at the drive-thru window.  Friends told us last year that there is someone in Butte who goes to Kmart on Christmas Eve and pays off amounts owed at Lay-Away.  These friends had a couple hundred dollars left to pay on their Christmas toys and gifts purchased at Kmart and this generous soul relieved them of that debt.  They never met the person; they most likely never will.

I stumbled across a blog post via (you know it, my favorite new obsession) Pinterest.com from a mom blogger who did an advent of Random Acts of Kindness with her children to teach, through example, the true meaning of the holidays.  Some examples were to leave a gift – not just a gratuity, but an actual gift for their waitress at a restaurant; a gift for the mailman and leaving a small package of diapers and wipes on a changing table in a public restroom.  They hid dollars in the toy aisle of the dollar store.  And they visited the local nursing home, bringing treats and joy to the some of the residents.

These little gestures brighten people’s day (and hearts).  Not expecting anything in return, the original giver starts a chain reaction whereby the recipient of an unexpected gift pays the gesture forward.  As we speed into the holiday season, keep these random acts in mind and over tip a waitress once in a while (also, please remember that tipping at a restaurant averages between 15% and 20% for good service nationally).  Make an extra holiday pie for the single guy at the end of the street.  Find special ways to show the kids that this time of year about giving, not just receiving (if possible).

I find it’s the people you least expect to be so generous.  It’s not people who own 2 or 3 homes, not the affluent, but the hand-to-mouth working class that can show such unselfish generosity.  In a small community, such as ours, these little efforts go a long way.  Even something as small as helping a friend by babysitting for an afternoon or doing a sink full of dishes can be a grand gesture of a gift.

Give generosity this season and brighten the community!  Share your Random Acts of Kindness at www.sustainablysadie.blogspot.com or email sustainablysadie@hotmail.com.

Use It Up

Sustainably Sadie
Use It Up

“Use It Up,” a game I first heard of on Martha Stewart radio, has been a theme in my house this last week.  For those harvesting the bounty of their own gardens, perhaps this has been a trend for several weeks now.  Finding ways to hide swiss chard in meals so that the family won’t complain, “More swiss chard?” or using up the canned goods from last year to make room for this year can inspire some creative thinking in the kitchen.

For me, this week, has been about using up the box of yellow zucchini squash my husband brought home and the elk meat from last year.  Where I used to search Google for recipe ideas, I now explore Pinterest.com for suggestions.   A Google search will result in big name domains; Pinterest leads me to cooking blogs.  The blogasphere is a wild and crazy place…there are so many.  But the cooking blogs give me something I don’t see at Martha Stewart or Epicurious—a story coupled with unique photography.  I just recently came across Pioneer Woman, and from a professional viewpoint, I ponder her rise in success as she has grown from blogger to having her own show on the Food Network.  Please feel free to post your comments at www.sustainablysadie.blogspot.com.

I didn’t want to just sauté the squash with onions.  From Pinterest inspiration, I tried fritters.  Grated the squash then mixed with onions, flour, eggs and spices then fried.  They sort of resembled small potato pancakes—not bad but I look forward to playing with this recipe more, fine-tuning it.  I served the fritters with Polish sausage.  Tuesday night, I tried squash boats—a variation on stuffed squash, cutting the squash in half lengthwise then topping with tomato sauce, spices, and Hot Italian sausage cut the same as the squash.

Mom gave broccoli from her garden.  Wednesday, I took a package of elk steaks out of the freezer and then looked on Pinterest for Mongolian beef and broccoli recipes.  Drawing from 2 different recipes, one written for slow cooker, I pulled out the Crock Pot in the afternoon and was able to have my first try at Mongolian Elk and broccoli ready in time for dinner.  Thursday night, I cut the sausage and squash boats in bite size pieces and tossed that with cooked pasta.

I am proud of those culinary accomplishments; I love “Use it Up”—it’s a game everyone wins (like a wine tasting) and it can save from wasting food.  I know you too are creating healthy, sustainable meals regularly…feel free to share at the blog.  Thanks for reading!

Adult Education

Sustainably Sadie
Adult Education

With baby due the month before Christmas, I am anxious to be all ready for the holiday long before December.  Despite squirreling away twice as much as I was able to last year, I rely heavily on hand-crafted gifts for the loved ones in our life.  Pinterest.com provides hundreds of ideas, but in the next few weeks, there are a couple of classes that are going to help me gift through the holidays.

I’ve mentioned before the Jewelry Camp workshop—bead and wire wrapping-- held at the River’s Edge Gallery October 19 and 20.  Contact Therese Hutchinson of the Main Street Market with questions and to sign up for this fun, informative six hour class:  1 to 4 pm Friday afternoon and 9 am to Noon on Saturday.

Another class I am ultra-excited about is the Mixed Media Adult Ed Art Class that Kelly Downing is teaching this fall.  The first class will be October 16, starting at 5:30 pm held in the Lunchroom at the Twin Bridges School.  The course will last 5 weeks, held on Tuesdays, with a class size limit of 12.  The nominal $20 class fee will result in 5 exciting projects.  The hand-crafted art can be gifted to Mom, Grandma, best friends, memories to share with Dad and Granddad.  The personalized canvases will mean more to those loved ones in your life than a Made in China gift purchased from an end-cap of a box store aisle.

There are other Adult Ed classes in our community that provide opportunities to create unique gifts.  A Google search revealed the website for the Ennis Continuing Education website, http://www.ennis-ece.org, and information can be found by searching sheridanwired.com for “adult education classes”.  Contact the Twin Bridges School, 684-5613, for information on the Mixed Media class as well as other Adult Education classes offer in Twin Bridges.  Giving the gift of an Adult Ed Class is another imaginative way to gift to loved ones this holiday season.

Hunting with Kids

Sustainably Sadie
Hunting with Kids

“I hunt with my kids, so I don’t have to hunt for them” is a quote that has been pinging around FB; I even heard the quote used in a wedding ceremony recently.  As the 2012 hunting season gets underway, I think it is a good time to acknowledge the importance of teaching our kids how to hunt.  Even if your kids aren’t of the hunter temperament, I think it is important for the kids of Southwestern Montana to take Hunter’s Education.

Learning gun safety and survivor skills in a classroom setting helps to solidify those concepts that parents teach at home.     Signaling for help and how to properly handle a gun are necessary skills for our young community members.  The great outdoors is literally right out our back door and knowledge is power.  We can protect our kids from harm by providing them with the proper information.

Hunting is a way of life.  It is sustainable legacy that I hold sacred.  Hunting with my father, with my brother, cousin, husband and friends strengthened those relationships.  Filling the freezer with lean, wild game is almost as exciting as chasing a bull through knee deep snow.  I pray that hunters respect each other and the law in order for a safe and fruitful hunting season.

And remember as you head out there this fall, that there are 12 year old kids having their very first experience of stalking, sighting and harvesting deer, elk, and antelope.

TBCA Fall Festival

Sustainably Sadie
TBCA Fall Festival
Friday October 5th, 5-8 pm

If it weren’t for the smoke, this would be the most amazing Indian summer.  The weather has been so warm; the fall colors are just starting to come on as we officially enter into Autumn.  Facebook is filled with pics of friends attending football games.  The presidential election isn’t the only rivalry causing a stir on cyber space…the Cat/ Griz game is November 17 this year.

Whether its hunting, hiking, fishing or chasing after kids in sports, there is another great way to take part in Autumnal activities—attend the Twin Bridges Community Association’s Fall Festival Friday October 5th, 5 to 8 pm at the Ruby Valley National Bank parking lot in Twin Bridges.  Tailgate with the family prior to the Twin Bridges-Shields Valley football game or Sheridan’s Homecoming game vs. Ennis with brats, hot dogs and beverages.   Twin Bridges Lady Falcons and Sheridan Lady Panthers also have Home Volleyball games that evening…in between supporting the athletes, stop by the Fall Festival for family fun!

There will be a Fall backdrop perfect for family photos.  The Twin Bridges Community Association is the hard-working group that decorates the town for Fall and Christmas.  They organize the filling of the planter-benches on Main Street.  They also put on the BBQ at Floating Flotillas and Fish Fantasies.  There are many more wonderful contributions this organization offers the community; show your continued support by stopping by the Fall Festival.

Apple bobbing, pumpkin decorating and face painting are among the other family friendly activities planned for that glorious day in Twin Bridges.  Last year, kids got to throw pie in the superintendent’s face.  The school also participated in the scare crow contest that was held last year.  This event in the past has been referred to as “Polka in the Park.”  So plan on some Polka and a few other surprises!  Show your support; join in the fun!  Help sustain your local community!
