Mother's Day, Part One

Sustainably Sadie
Mother’s Day: Part One

When life gets overwhelming, I find it therapeutic to take time out to create.  Even searching for ideas is a welcome mental break from bills and to do lists.  The internet and websites like Pinterest.com make easy work of being able to search through hundreds of suggestions, projects and hints.  I have Mother’s Day gifts to make for the wonderful mothers in my life.  I am also in search of craft projects appropriate for my 3 year old son.

While looking through my keepsake box (filled mostly with notes and pictures from our daughter), I found cards and gifts from Mother’s Day past.  One year, Eva brought home a bouquet of paper flowers.  Cut-outs of her hand were shaped into beautiful tulips.  Something as simple as paper flowers will make mom smile because it is the time spent and the thought put into gift that matters.

Hand-crafted gifts can be made with items around the house.  Re-using paper scraps, yarn, ribbons, jewelry etc is budget friendly.  I came across a craft project for making a unique locket out of a spent matchbox.  Glue paper, lace, beads and ribbon (for necklace portion) to box and include a special picture, note or memory in the inside.

My husband and son recently returned to Oregon to my help my in-laws with the Small Farmer’s Journal Annual Draft Horse Equipment Auction & Swap Meet, www.smallfarmersjournal.com.  My mother-in-law, Kristi, sent my husband back with a box of old paper pill boxes.  I don’t know how long ago pharmacists stopped using paper boxes for medication (maybe 90 years ago?) but  I am sure enjoying Mod-Podging paper scraps to these boxes.  I intend to create special keepsake boxes with special messages and I am going to attempt a couple of the paper box lockets for grandmother presents this Mother’s Day.  I am thrilled that these paper boxes will also become our Advent Calendar for Christmas…I have wanted to make one for several years now and finally have plan.

Even a handmade card paired with spring seed packets will make Mom smile.  Decorate a clean tin can and fill with herbs.  More ideas for Mother’s Day next week.  Post your suggestions and stories as comments at www.sustainablysadie.blogspot.com or email to sustainablysadie@hotmail.com.
