Mother's Day, Part Two

Sustainably Sadie
Mother’s Day: Part 2

By now, I hope you’ve made a plan for how you are going to spoil the Mothers in your life this coming Sunday.  If you’re the Mom of procrastinators and (Heaven forbid) a forgetful household, make a plan to spoil yourself this 2012 Mother’s Day.  Plan a spa day, a personal day, leave a note and escape.  If your kids are thoughtful enough to make you breakfast in bed but this year you have a particular request, label the fixins with clear instructions Saturday night.

Following the spa theme, create a unique shower scrub for Mom using salt or sugar.  Many recipes are available online and you can personalize and decorate the containers.  Create an emergency kit for Mom by filling with her favorite things (chocolate?), lip stuff, calming candles etc for when mom needs a time out.

How about embellishing a hat (floppy, gardening, chic) to create a completely personal and unique gift that Mom will love?  After church, opt for a picnic lunch put together with Mom in mind.  Insulated bag, back pack, and traditional basket are among some of the many choices of picnic container.  Fill the basket with plastic wine glasses, a chilled bottle of Rosé or Mom’s favorite beverage, and her favorite finger foods.  Don’t forget something sweet (chocolate), blanket or chairs, cloth napkins, bottle opener and a special note for Mom.

Create priceless art with finger paints and canvas (available at The Health Emporium in Sheridan).  I am going to try to create butterfly art using the kids’ colorfully painted feet as wings.  Bold colors and hand prints pair beautifully for a modern art installation.  Create a scrap book for Mom filled with pictures, notes, and memories that she will cherish forever.

If your Mom loves to garden, it is easy to run with that theme.  Create a seed packet bouquet; decorate flower pots then plant herbs or Mom’s favorite flavors.  For my Mom, we are building a unique “sculpture” for the garden using flower pots and rebar—an idea I got from Pinterest.com.  Spend a day at Jackson’s Garden in Sheridan.  It is an enchanting, tranquil space that is a wonderful addition to our community.

Jackson’s Garden, www.jacksonsgarden.org, is looking for members (growers) and volunteers to help with garden tasks.  Highlights for this year include early greens already harvestable from the new high tunnel (extends garden’s growing season), a new Kids Club where they tend their own garden plot, participation in the Sheridan’s Farmer’s Market (Tuesday evenings), and more events using this beautiful space as a venue.  Check out their awesome website; Jackson’s Garden is sustainable and Local!
