Local Gift Shopping

Local Gift Shopping

Panicking about what to get my 18 year old sister-in-law for her birthday, after looking through her Pinterest boards (a great way to get ideas what to gift friends and family) and asking advice from my other sister-in-law, I had a flash of inspiration.  Despite her young age, husband’s lil’ sis is captivated by Civil War era life…where to shop locally for such a niche??  Rank’s Mercantile in Virginia City!  I had great success shopping for lil’ sis at the mercantile—I found great books, clothing and accessories that will allow us to gift creatively for years to come to the girl who has everything.

The holiday season is a great time to help boost the local economy.  Taking the time to stop in our local shops to purchase unique, one-of-a-kind gifts for loved ones can help those local shops more than you realize.  We all know how long winter is here in Southwest Montana.  Summer is the high season where we small business owners hope to make a profit and winter can often be about praying to make enough to pay the bills.  Shopping locally for Christmas not only provides an opportunity to give unique presents from local vendors, it also gives those friends and neighbors revenue that allows them to keep their doors open.

In the coming weeks, I’ll be compiling a list of Buy Local Holiday Gift suggestions.  Please share your ideas by posting comments at www.sustainablysadie.blogspot.com or emailing sustainablysadie@hotmail.com.  What other shops do you recommend for Holiday shopping?  What specific ideas excite you?  Your community wants to hear your suggestions.

Besides Rank’s, I can get really excited about shopping at Kindred Spirits and the Health Emporium in Sheridan and Granny’s County Store in Silver Star.  Gift Certificates from local beauty shops is another creative gift idea.  Target’s and Wal*Mart’s doors are going to stay open whether you spend $100 there this holiday season or not, the same cannot be said of your local small businesses.  If you are looking for ways to give generosity this holiday season, kill 2 birds with one stone and shop locally.  Patronizing your local businesses is a great way to give back to your local community.
