Hunting with Kids

Sustainably Sadie
Hunting with Kids

“I hunt with my kids, so I don’t have to hunt for them” is a quote that has been pinging around FB; I even heard the quote used in a wedding ceremony recently.  As the 2012 hunting season gets underway, I think it is a good time to acknowledge the importance of teaching our kids how to hunt.  Even if your kids aren’t of the hunter temperament, I think it is important for the kids of Southwestern Montana to take Hunter’s Education.

Learning gun safety and survivor skills in a classroom setting helps to solidify those concepts that parents teach at home.     Signaling for help and how to properly handle a gun are necessary skills for our young community members.  The great outdoors is literally right out our back door and knowledge is power.  We can protect our kids from harm by providing them with the proper information.

Hunting is a way of life.  It is sustainable legacy that I hold sacred.  Hunting with my father, with my brother, cousin, husband and friends strengthened those relationships.  Filling the freezer with lean, wild game is almost as exciting as chasing a bull through knee deep snow.  I pray that hunters respect each other and the law in order for a safe and fruitful hunting season.

And remember as you head out there this fall, that there are 12 year old kids having their very first experience of stalking, sighting and harvesting deer, elk, and antelope.
